How to Tell if The Pool Needs Resurfacing

A swimming pool can add to a home’s value and provide years of fun and lasting memories for families. But swimming pools also need to receive a little TLC in return for all they give. When well maintained, pools can last a lifetime. However, as they age, they also might need some repairs and updates.

Pool owners may need to resurface the interior of the pool at some point during its life. But how can a pool owner determine when it’s time to resurface the pool? Aquaman Pools offers the following tips:

Stains and Erosion — Stains and erosion can appear in various ways in the swimming pool… and they can be considered red flags that it’s time to resurface the pool. Stains occur for many reasons. For example, an imbalance of chemicals in the water or even leaves left at the bottom of the pool for too long can create stains. However, if tough stains can’t be brushed out, it may be time for a resurface.

Corroded Grout — Tile pool surfaces are meant to stand the test of time. But as they age, they can begin to show signs that it’s time for a resurface. The grout between pool tiles is a good place to look for this sign. Over time, grout can start to corrode and when it does, it’s time to resurface the pool.

Missing or Chipped Tiles — Along with corroded grout, missing or chipped pool tiles are a dead giveaway that the pool is in need of a resurface. As pool tiles lose their adhesiveness, they can pop off. Tiles can also become cracked or damaged — and then they become a hazard to swimmers… not to mention look unsightly. So keep an eye out for these signs — the pool is trying to send a message!

Water Loss — More water loss than usual is a sure sign of a leak — and undetected leaks can lead to real (and often expensive!) problems. Pool owners should always maintain a consistent water level so when it drops unexpectedly, they can get to the bottom of the problem right away. In many cases, water loss means there are cracks in the pool’s surface that need to be repaired.

Rough Patches — This is a naturally occurring issue over time as the pool’s interior surface starts to break down. Rough patches can also form due to chemical imbalance of the pool water. Either way, as rough patches start to accumulate, pool owners should take this as a sign that a pool resurface could be needed in the near future.
