POOL CHEMISTRY GLOSSARY

HARDNESS

dissolved calcium & magnesium

It’s vital to manage calcium hardness, pH, and total alkalinity to maintain the right chemical balance in your pool. Hardness should range between 200-400 ppm in pools and 150-250 ppm in spas.

CHLORINE

water oxidizer and sanitizer

This is the most common chemical used in the treatment of swimming pools. It disinfects your pool and oxidizes, or destroys, other materials present in your pool, including dirt. Chlorine helps give your pool its refreshing, clear blue gleam.

pH

acidity or basicity of the water

The level of the acidity or basicity is measured on a scale from 0 to 14, with 0 being very acidic, 7 neutral, and 14 alkaline, or very basic. Chlorine’s ability to do its job is directly affected by pH level, and the higher the pH is, the less the chlorine is able to disinfect and oxidize.

ALKALINITY

Total alkalinity is a “cousin” of pH, and measures all carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides, and other alkaline substances in pool water. Alkalinity also refers to the ability of your pool water to resist changes in pH, and pH itself is alkaline dependent.

This chlorine stabilizer establishes a weak bond with chlorine, which keeps the sun’s UV rays from destroying the chlorine in your pool. Think of it as the ultimate bodyguard for keeping your pool clean!
